    Drug Prevention Horn Lesson Plan

Situational Factors The unit plan that I developed is for an eleventh and twelfth-grade Health II class. I can only offer two sections of Health II a semester making both of my sections large at 30 students each. All of the students that attend the Kodiak High School have to take one full credit of health. They receive half a credit taking Health I either their freshmen or sophomore year High School and receive the other half taking Health II as juniors or seniors. We currently have a population of 664 students at the Kodiak High School, 63% of those students are enrolled as a minority. Within Piaget Stages of…

    Teaching Philosophy

One of the best attributes that I have as a teacher is the fact that I am flexible. To meet the needs of my students and each of my classes I will make adjustments that I need to during each lesson or unit. Most of my lessons involve active participation by the students and the inclusion of several different learning styles in one. I have found that one of the most important aspects of my teaching practice is reflection. Reflection allows me the ability to make the adjustments that are needed to better educate my students. The main focal point for my classroom is to create a community of learners…

    Educational Technology Tool Review

This week for our assignment, I reviewed three tools to use for classroom instruction. The tools that I reviewed were: Google Expeditions, Explain Everything Whiteboard and Adobe Spark Page. Both Google Expeditions and Adobe Spark Page I will be using for my instruction in my own classroom. The Explain Everything Whiteboard was alright but not as great of an experience as I would have hoped. More than likely I won’t use this tool again. Google Expeditions https://poly.google.com/view/eqaGFOPsExX The next unit I am teaching in my U.S. History class is American Imperialism. I made a Google Expedition of the different territories that the U.S. annexes or acquires during this time period.…

    Article Review 5

For my last article review, I wanted to look into the application of a new type of educational technology for the classroom. I have learned of the use of virtual reality in the classroom, but I have not learned of the application of augmented reality in instruction. The article that I chose was, A Review of Research on Augmented Reality in Education: Advantages and Applications, the researcher did not conduct a research project themselves, but reviewed nine specific research studies on augmented reality. I think this research has value to any educator that is interested in learning more about the use of augmented reality in education or how it can…

    Article Review 4

Horn Article Review #4  Originally, I started looking into PBL in another class because the idea I have for my Health II redesign would involve turning the class into a series of problem-based units. I’m still learning more about PBL and the design layout of a PBL course, but I like the idea of allowing students to focus their learning on topics that are interested in within the unit topic. I want to still be able to integrate the necessary content for Health II, but it would still require me to semi throw away the current curriculum document. I stumbled upon this article and was intrigued by it because it…

    Horn Article Review 3

With the exploration of different aspects of online education in our article reviews, I have found myself stuck in a place of questioning what the advantages and disadvantages are of online instruction. I am specifically interested in the application of online learning in secondary education because I am a high school teacher. I am interested in what prepares students to be successful or unsuccessful in online courses. When a student fails to earn credit in an F2F instructional course they are often allowed to complete an online course to make-up that credit. I understand the need for credit recovery especially at the secondary level, but I question if taking a…

    Horn Article 2

For my second article review, I wanted to focus on online learning and what factors made online learners ready to interact and learn online. I have been focusing on social-emotional learning as an aspect of preparing twenty-first-century learners and wanted to see how this played into online learning. I did not find any studies directly related to SEL, but I did find an article from Sakarya University by authors Zeliha Demir Kaymak and Mehmet Baris Horzum (2013) that is closely related. The article, Relationship between Online Learning Readiness and Structure and Interaction of Online Learning Students, was a quantitative study focusing on online graduate students. I struggled with the inconsistent…

    Horn Article 1

Article Review One  Being a lifelong learner is part of the reason that I was attracted to the career of teaching. I didn’t always love the individual instructional strategies that were implemented by teachers, but I have always loved to learn. When I decided to go back to school to achieve my Master’s degree I knew that I would not be able to attend classes and I would more than likely be completing my entire degree online at home. As an adult online learner, I found that this research had tremendous value for me. Like the participants in the study, I did not expect online learning to be as collaborative…
